This survey is inspired by the Listening to Mothers National Survey and was created by Nandini Arya, Undergraduate Student at University of Michigan in collaboration with Kellie Bailey, CBD (CBI), CBE.
In order to create actionable programs towards better maternity outcomes, we first must raise awareness of current maternity practice in our community.
Research suggests 1 in 3 births are experienced as psychologically traumatic and as many as 1 in 5 moms and 1 in 10 dads will suffer from a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. Contributing factors include a lag of up to 17 years between best evidence and maternity system practice as well as how women are treated throughout their maternity experiences (sources CDC and International Journal of Childbirth). Indiana specifically has the third highest maternal mortality rate among all reporting states and The Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Committee's 2023 report has claimed up to 77% of these deaths as preventable with doula support, trauma informed care, and access to mental health services as recommendations for systems and communities.
